Rize is a city in north east Turkey on the Black Sea coast, with a population of 120,000. The city is built around a small bay on the Black Sea coast, on a narrow strip of flat land between the sea and the mountains behind. Rize enjoys a mild, extremely wet climate, therefore the surrounding countryside is rich with vegetation and is attracting more and more visitors every year. The average temperatures are around 25 oC in the summer months June to August.
Rize is a centre for processing and shipping Rize Tea, the tea grown in its surrounding highlands. Tea was introduced in the 1940s, helping the city to establish a richer economy, alongside its fishing industry. Tea gardens are the main sight in the town’s panoramic views – you can even find tea and kiwifruit plants growing around the town.
